The minutes after a car crash can feel surreal. Even if no one has been seriously injured, it’s not uncommon to be in a bit of shock and not know exactly what to do. It’s smart to have an app on your phone designed to help people after a crash. Even having a checklist readily available can be valuable.

Certainly, if you or anyone else is obviously or seriously injured, getting emergency aid is the first priority. According to the Indiana Driver’s Manual, “In the event the accident results in the injury or death of another person, the driver is required to provide reasonable assistance to those injured or trapped in vehicles as directed by law enforcement, medical personnel or a 911 operator.”

Here are five others that everyone should take in the aftermath of any collision.

1. Exchange information with the other driver

You’ll want the other driver’s name, address, insurer and policy number and the vehicle’s license plate number. Taking photos and videos of the vehicles and the scene is also helpful.

2. Call 911

The Indiana Driver’s Manual states, “As soon as possible, the driver should make sure law enforcement (local police, sheriff, or state police) are notified of the accident. It’s best to call 911 even if there are no serious injuries or signs of impaired driving so law enforcement can come to the scene and make a report. This can be helpful for an insurance claim or lawsuit.

3. Watch your words

Don’t apologize or admit fault, even if the other driver is blaming or shouting at you. You can’t be sure of everything that happened. Even if you did something negligent (like glancing at your phone), the other driver may have been doing something worse, like drinking. Anything you say can potentially be used against you.

4. Get a medical evaluation as soon as possible

Even if you decline medical aid at the scene and don’t think you’re injured, it’s important to be checked for internal injuries as soon as possible. If you did suffer injuries, it’s important for a doctor to document them and connect them to the accident.

5. Protect your rights and your case

You’ll want to report the accident to your insurer. However, be extremely cautious about talking to the other driver’s insurer. Getting legal guidance can help you navigate this challenging time, deal with the other party’s insurer and help you get the full compensation to which you’re entitled.
