What Is Medical Misdiagnosis?

Medical misdiagnosis occurs when a health care provider makes an incorrect diagnosis of a patient’s condition or fails to diagnose a condition altogether. This can lead to incorrect or delayed treatment that can cause injury or death to a patient. Misdiagnosis is a form of medical malpractice and can occur in various health care settings, including hospitals, clinics and physician offices.

Some of the most common types of medical misdiagnosis that can occur are listed below. This is not a comprehensive list:

  • Failure to timely diagnose heart disease
  • Failure to timely diagnose cancer
  • Failure to timely diagnose infection
  • Failure to timely diagnose bowel perforation or injury
  • Failure to timely diagnose other organ injury
  • Failure to timely diagnose active bleeding
  • Failure to timely diagnose acute health conditions
  • Failure to timely diagnose chronic health conditions

Common Contributing Factors In Medical Misdiagnosis

Common factors that can occur and lead to negligent medical misdiagnosis include:

  • Failure to obtain an adequate medical history about a patient: The failure of a physician to obtain a thorough understanding of a patient’s medical history and recent symptom history can lead to a failure by the physician to correctly create a reasonable and comprehensive differential diagnosis and a failure to make a correct and timely diagnosis of a patient’s actual condition.
  • Failure to order appropriate tests and radiology studies: Not obtaining necessary laboratory or diagnostic tests for a given set of symptoms can result in an incorrect diagnosis being made.
  • Failure to properly interpret tests and radiology studies: If a physician fails to comply with reasonable standards of medical care in developing a differential diagnosis for a patient, that can result in the misdiagnosis of a patient’s condition which can cause serious and permanent injury and death to a patient. Patients are sometimes injured because a physician fails to follow up to review the results of diagnostic tests ordered or fails to properly interpret laboratory tests or radiology studies performed to assist in making the diagnosis of a patient’s illness. The failure to review test results or the misinterpretation of the test results can result in the misdiagnosis of a patient’s condition and can cause the condition to continue causing injury to a patient because of the failure to diagnose the condition.
  • Failure to create an adequate differential diagnosis: When a patient presents to a physician with symptoms, a physician will create a list of potential conditions that could be causing the symptoms. That list is known as a differential diagnosis. The differential diagnosis is based on a patient’s symptoms, medical history, family history, physical exam results, and initial laboratory and diagnostic testing results. The differential diagnosis will often include both common and less common conditions. Once a list of possible conditions is established, the physician will systematically evaluate that list using further information and testing, as necessary, to rule out conditions that are not likely to be causing a patient’s symptoms. The goal of the differential diagnosis is to establish the most likely diagnosis or cause of a patient’s symptoms so that prompt treatment of the condition can be provided to protect the health and safety of the patient and improve the patient’s condition. Differential diagnosis helps physicians determine the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment for a patient. If a physician does not timely develop a correct differential diagnosis for a patient, then the physician may not develop the correct diagnosis for the patient and, as a result, fail to treat the patient’s condition properly. This can lead to serious permanent injury and death in a patient.
  • Failure to obtain necessary consultations with medical specialists: There are many specialties within the practice of medicine. A patient’s illness sometimes requires the intervention of one or multiple medical specialists to assist in determining the correct diagnosis and correct treatment for a patient. Sometimes, a physician is presented with a sick patient who requires examination and evaluation by other specialists. A common mistake that can be made by a physician is a physician’s failure to recognize his or her limits and his or her choice to persist in providing treatment to a patient whose condition or illness may be outside of the expertise of the treating physician. When that occurs, there is great risk to the health and safety of the patient. A physician must always know when he or she lacks the expertise to diagnose and treat a patient and when to refer a patient to and obtain help from a medical specialist. The failure of a physician to know his or her own limits and the failure to refer a patient to a medical specialist may result in causing serious personal injury or death to a patient caused by a delay in making the correct diagnosis and ordering the correct treatment for the patient.
  • Communication failures between health care providers: Poor communication between health care providers, such as between doctors and nurses or between doctors, can cause a misunderstanding of a patient’s condition, can result in critical information being overlooked, can lead to medical misdiagnosis, and cause permanent injury or death to a patient.
